Protective Coatings   Most carpet purchased today has a protective coating. This protective coating acts like a sealant covering the carpet fiber. When there is a spill, the coating is a barrier between the fiber and the substance that was spilled. This allows the spot to come completely out. The color dye on the carpet fiber has a rigid surface. There are a lot of little holes and cracks for the spots to penetrate. The protective coating is slick on the outside once it dries. It works like a non-stick skillet. With a professional carpet cleaning, it all comes off. If properly maintained, the original color of the carpet can endure much longer.    Protective coatings also help when vacuuming. Static electricity tends to build in carpet. People use to get shocked all the time when they touched something metal after walking across the carpet. That was before the days of protective coatings. Protective coatings are non-conductive and tend to reduce if not eliminate static electricity from building in the carpet. Static electricity in the carpet acts upon electrically charged dust particles. Essentially, the static electricity acts like a magnet holding dust particles down in the carpet while the vacuum cleaner is trying to pull it up. Reducing or eliminating static electricity in the carpet will allow the vacuum cleaner to pull from deeper down in the carpet.
