Prep For Water Damage Technician

When preparing for the water damage restoration team to arrive, there are a few things to keep in mind like safety first. Try not to be walking around in the flooded area if there are possibly electrical cords or electronics in the water. If the water is coming through the light fixtures, don’t be in there. The best thing to do is to turn the breaker off for that area or room of the house or building in these situations. Common sense is the best approach, but it’s easy to get excited at these times and forget a few things that might have serious consequences.

Think about precious items that might be under a bed or a closet or anywhere else where the water has reached. Get them out of the water immediately if possible otherwise point these items out to the technician as soon as he arrives.

Small personal items on the floors, dressers, end tables, coffee tables, and other similar items will have to be cleared at some time if they are in an area that has been flooded. We can get off to a real slow start sometimes if we have to find places to put a lot of small personal items. It helps us a lot when we come in and those items have been cleared. We can move the big furniture around as necessary and get down to business very quickly.

Sometimes people need help moving even the smallest of items, and we sure don’t mind doing it. We want to do it the way the customer wants it done.

If there is wet carpet and padding, it is very likely we will at least remove the padding. So, anything in that area will have to be moved. Again, if there is a dresser in the way that is not a problem. If the dresser is covered with last month’s wardrobe when we arrive, it may take a little longer on the first day.

If you get frustrated, and you can’t seem to get anything done, don’t worry we understand. Sit down, and try to relax. Just give us a call, and we can do it all for you.

If the water is still running, shut it off. Call a plumber if necessary. If the water can be shut off to just that area, that is even better, but don’t take any chances if there is any question.

Air movers and dehumidifiers will be left drying the home or building for a few days. Most jobs are dried in 3 to 4 days. Some take longer. People can remain in the home, but the equipment needs to remain running.
